[10.4] Many of the students thought the ammeter was broken, or the switch was open, or misread the question and thought the ammeter was being used to measure potential difference. Very few of the students scored 2 marks, while only about 3 % of the students scored 1 mark.

    AQA 8463 · June 2025 · Paper 1H · Q6 · 7 marks — mark scheme

    Examiner report

[06.3] Students found this question difficult with very few scoring marks because of incorrect assumptions about how potential difference, current and resistance are affected by series and parallel circuits. Marking point 2 was dependent on marking point 1 so that students who stated that the current was increased without a valid reason would not score. The third mark was demanding in requiring an understanding of how P = IV related to the circuit being considered. Just over 80% of the students scored no marks.

    AQA 8463 · June 2025 · Paper 1H · Q9 · 12 marks — mark scheme

    Examiner report

[09.1] Many of the students did not convert the 70 cm into metres and some students converted the energy unnecessarily. Not converting the height stopped marking point 1 from scoring and converting the energy unnecessarily stopped 1 marking point from being scored too. Some students, despite setting out their calculations correctly, did not use brackets around the denominator and arrived at an answer of 0.0245 or 2.45. Nearly 80 % of the students scored full marks on this question.

[06.4] Only 2 % of students scored 2 marks and 11 % of students scored 1 mark. This question was targeted at grade 8-9 students so required a precisely worded answer. Most students thought that the student believed that power and p.d. were directly proportional but had done the calculation incorrectly, so the power should be 2.0 W not 4.0 W. Statements like ‘if power was proportional to p.d. then the power should be 2 W not 4 W’ were commonly seen and scored zero.

[05.2] About 30% of students scored all 3 marks for this explanation. 10% of students scored 2 marks and 10% scored 1 mark. A lot of student answers were not creditworthy, with mixed up descriptions of ion transfer, electron transfer, proton transfer, protons weighing more than electrons and transfer of electrons increasing the mass of the rod on the balance. As a result about 50% of students scored zero.

    Text version

A plastic rod becomes negatively charged when rubbed with a cloth, leaving the cloth positively charged. In a second setup, a negatively charged rod rests on a balance and another negatively charged rod is held stationary above it without contact.

Students found this Required Practical question difficult and students did not score many marks across the whole question. Many confused responses were seen for 03.1 mixing up other required practical activities. Only a third of students scored a mark on 03.2 and 03.3, many students incorrectly thought they needed to read the value on the ammeter in 03.3. Question 03.4 was better answered with 45% of students giving a correct answer, the most common answer being ‘more accurate’. Many students are still using the term ‘precision’ when they mean ‘resolution’.

Question 07.1 discriminated well between students and there were multiple ways of arriving at the answer, using a selection of electricity equations. To score 2 marks in 07.2 students needed to select 3 sets of values to show that the constant was the same and very few students managed to do this. Many students simply stated that as one quantity increased, the other quantity decreased, revealing that they did not understand the term inversely proportional.

Question 10 was poorly answered across the question. Few students were able to explain the benefit of transmitting electricity at a high potential difference in 10.1. Many students stated, incorrectly, that static electricity was responsible for the danger involved in flying a kite near power cables. Question 10.3 was poorly answered and many students chose to continue the existing graph line, rather than draw their own. Very few students appreciated in 10.4 that the wires would behave as if they are in parallel, despite the question stating this.

[08.4] This explanation was not well known, only 11% of students scored 2 marks, while 26% of students scored 1 mark. The most common answer was that ‘the resistance is shared’. Another common answer was to use the equation for resistors in parallel as an explanation. Of those students who had the correct idea, most gained a mark for stating that there would be multiple paths for the current to take, but very few were able to progress to the idea that the total current in the circuit would be greater.

    AQA 8463 · November 2020 · Paper 1H · Q9 · 10 marks — mark scheme

    Examiner report

[09.1] 53% of students scored 5 marks on this multi-step calculation. Lower-scoring students didn’t score marks for stating and trying to use incorrect physics equations or rearranging correct equations incorrectly. The main reasons for not scoring full marks included: knowing one form of an equation correctly, but re-arranging it incorrectly, eg stating P = I V then re- arranging it to I = V/P, mixing up two half-known equations eg P = I2 V, not realising that the 5 marks for this question warranted more than using one basic equation, eg stating R = V/I and substituting the given value of power for I.

    A fault in a 230 V household lighting switch gives a mild electric shock. Mean power transfer to the person is 5.75 W. Maximum let-go current (mA) against frequency (Hz) is a smooth U-shaped curve through approximately (5,12.5), (10,12), (20,10.5), (30,9.5), (40,9.0), (50,8.8), (60,9.2), (70,10.0), (80,11.2), (90,13.2), (100,15.7). UK mains is 50 Hz.

[07.2] Approximately 83% of students answered this question correctly. Students should refer to the Physics specification for the accepted symbols for circuit components. Textbooks and revision guides do not necessarily use the specification symbols. The circles in the component symbol scored a mark even if shown as blobs rather than circles.

    Text version

A circuit has a battery and ammeter feeding two parallel lamp branches. Candidate switch positions J and L are on opposite sides of one lamp branch, K is on the other lamp branch, and M is on the common supply return. Two further circuits use identical components: Circuit X has two lamps in parallel; Circuit Y has two lamps in series.

An electrician replaces an old electric shower. The UK live wire is at 230 V and the electrician is at 0 V. A graph relates recommended maximum power input to wire cross-sectional area; near 13.8 kW the curve passes through about (9.0 mm2, 13.2 kW) and (10.0 mm2, 14.0 kW). The new shower has power 13.8 kW. In 300 s, 18 000 C flows through it.
